Description

Circa 1977 to 1981

This "CE Panel" (Customer Engineer Panel) is a component from a vintage IBM System/34 computer system. It contains lights and switches used specifically by maintenance personnel (IBM Customer Engineers) for diagnostics, troubleshooting, and maintenance of the system.

Its primary function is to provide low-level hardware control and diagnostic capabilities that are not available to the standard system operator through the regular operator panel or software interfaces.

Key functions and features of the CE Panel include:

  • Running diagnostic programs: It allows the customer engineer to initiate specific diagnostic tests to isolate hardware problems.

  • Hardware-level control: It features switches (such as a "Stop" switch and a "Mode Selector" switch) that can stop the main storage processor or control processor for detailed analysis.

  • Displaying/Altering memory or registers: The panel includes lights (often LEDs or hexadecimal displays) and switches that allow an engineer to view the contents of memory addresses or registers, and potentially alter them for debugging purposes.

  • System initialization support: It has a "CE Start" switch and a "CE MODE" switch used in specific start-up or dump procedures for support processing.

  • Detailed problem determination: It is used in conjunction with specific maintenance manuals (MAPs - Maintenance Analysis Procedures) to perform detailed fault isolation when standard error recovery or software diagnostics are insufficient.

In essence, the CE panel serves as a direct hardware interface for expert maintenance and repair, providing capabilities beyond normal operational control.
