Description
Circa Late 1990's to Early 2000's
A custom manufactured movie prop featuring simulated functionality. Designed to portray a specialized high-power electromagnetic tool designed for the rapid and permanent erasure of magnetic storage media.
Practical Features:
- Illuminated red "POWER" indicator as well as an animated blue LED bar-graph display. Display quickly "ramps up" to "full output" with each trigger press—"ramps down" when released.
- Can be reconfigured to portray an "Optical Scanner" with the installation of an available custom "Optical Module".
Primary Use Case:
Suited for use in high-security data centers, military intelligence facilities, and forensic laboratories. Its function is to perform "emergency degaussing," ensuring that sensitive data on magnetic tapes or hard drives is irrecoverable in situations where physical destruction is impractical. This allows security personnel to sanitize multiple racks of server drives or tape libraries quickly during site evacuations or "scorched earth" data protocols.
Alternate Plausible Uses:
- EM Scanning Unit: Used for magnetic radiation detection.
- EMP Gun: Used for close-range destruction of sensitive unshielded electronics.
- Optical Scanner (with the accessory "Optical Module" installed).
NOTE: The brand name "AMERIMAG" was created as the fictitious manufacturer for this device. If you like this name, and wish to use it, check with your production legal team—It may possibly clear again for on-screen use.
History:
Produced by WHITE MONKEY DESIGN and designed by PROPOLOGY.ca, this prop first appeared in The Sentinel TV series episode "Love & Guns" (May 15, 1996). Its design was inspired by the classic horseshoe magnet. While now black, part of the main housing was originally trimmed in red, to reflect that influence. Later, for a different television series, an "optical module" was temporarily installed to repurpose the prop as an optical scanner.
