Description
Circa 1972
A form of removable hard disk storage used with minicomputers, primarily the PDP-8 and PDP-11 series from Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). Its use case was to provide:
- System Storage: The pack could function as the main system disk for the operating system (like PDP-11 DOS or RSTS) and program files.
- Data Archiving & Transfer: The removable nature of the 14-inch, single-platter cartridge allowed users to have virtually unlimited offline storage for large datasets, making it easy to archive data or move it between different systems and locations.
- Fast Data Access: Compared to tape storage, the DECpack offered much faster access times to stored data, which was crucial for applications like patient history systems in hospitals or inventory control.
- System Expandability: Multiple drives could be connected to a single controller, allowing for system capacity to be expanded from a few megabytes to nearly 20 megabytes as needed.
