Description

Circa

Designed to replace a single, 6-volt lantern battery (ANSI No. 908) by using four D-cell batteries instead. While an Alkaline 6-volt lantern battery will produce the longest usable running time, this adaptor is a viable solution (with no loss of brightness) when that battery is not available.

Battery Performance Comparison

Alkaline 6V Lantern Battery (Standard):

  • Typical Capacity: ~26,000 mAh.

  • Runtime Performance: This is the gold standard for runtime. It contains four large "F-cells," giving it the highest energy density for long-term, low-drain use in lanterns.

Four Alkaline D-Cells (In Adaptor)

  • Typical Capacity: ~18,000 to 20,500 mAh.

  • Runtime Performance: You can expect roughly 70% to 80% of the runtime of a dedicated 6V alkaline lantern battery. This is the most common and reliable alternative.

Carbon-Zinc 6V "Heavy Duty" Battery:

  • Typical Capacity: ~11,000 to 12,000 mAh.

  • Runtime Performance: Despite the "Heavy Duty" label, these have much lower capacity. Using Alkaline D-cells in your converter will actually outlast a standard Carbon-Zinc lantern battery by nearly double.

Four NiMH Rechargeable D-Cells (In Adaptor):

  • Typical Capacity: ~8,000 to 12,000 mAh.

  • Runtime Performance: While the "per-charge" runtime is shorter than alkaline, these are superior for high-drain devices (like powerful spotlights) because they maintain a steady voltage until they are nearly empty.

Chemistry Matters:

If a 6V lantern battery does not explicitly say "Alkaline" on the label, it is likely a Carbon-Zinc ("Heavy Duty") battery. In this case, using four Alkaline D-cells in your converter will actually provide a longer runtime than the original 6V battery.
