Description
Circa Mid 1980's to Late 1980's (ESTIMATED)
A specialized dual-station electronic warfare and signals intelligence (SIGINT) device produced by INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND NETWORKS CORPORATION. It features two mirrored consoles (Station 1 and Station 2) that interlock into a portable and rugged transport case.
1. Primary Use: SIGINT & EW Training
The device functions as a laboratory and field-deployable training aid for Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) and Electronic Warfare (EW) specialists.
- Signal Interception: Operators practice identifying frequencies (FREQ.) and monitoring the duration (TIME) of intercepted transmissions.
- Direction Finding: Using the Line of Bearing (LOB) readouts, trainees learn to triangulate and "fix" a target's physical location.
- Audio Analysis: Integrated Headphone and Volume controls allow for the identification of signal modulation and voice characteristics.
2. Tactical Application: Deception Operations
When coupled with external transmission hardware (such as an IMSI Catcher or tactical RF transmitter), the system is used to feed false intelligence to an adversary.
- Scripting Realistic Intel: The dual-station setup allows operators to author and time "false" conversations that mirror the technical cadence and "Pattern of Life" of a legitimate local telephone system.
- Signature Matching: Technicians use the simulator to ensure the "electronic fingerprint" of the deception (modulation and signal strength) is indistinguishable from real local traffic.
- Injection: The scenarios developed on the ISN unit are transmitted into the local environment via the Remote or Supervisor ports, successfully delivering "spoofed" intelligence to an adversary's monitoring sensors.
3. Scientific Application: Human Behavioral Science
The simulator serves as a controlled environment for studying human performance and psychological responses under tactical stress.
- Cognitive Load & Stress Testing: Researchers manipulate TIME and signal complexity to observe how urgency and high workload affect an operator’s accuracy, decision-making, and physiological stress markers.
- Deception Research: The system is used to study "behavioral cues of deception," observing how operators' communication patterns change when they are knowingly feeding false information.
- Team Dynamics & Authority: Scientists use the Station 1/Station 2 and Supervisor configuration to study collaboration, interpersonal trust, and obedience to authority during high-stakes tactical exercises.
