Description
Circa Late 1970's to Early 1980's (ESTIMATED)
Use Case:
An accessory designed to add a hands-free speakerphone function to a standard telephone, allowing users to make and receive calls without holding the handset. This was particularly useful in office environments for conference calls with multiple participants in a single room, or in homes where users wanted to talk while moving around or doing other tasks. The volume is adjusted by using the knob on the front.
Historical Significance:
The Companion III is a representative artifact of the shift toward hands-free communication options in both business and residential settings. Northern Electric played a significant role in Canadian telecommunications history, producing the first dial equipment in Canada and manufacturing many of the components for the Trans-Canada telephone toll system. This product reflects the company's long history of developing consumer and business phone accessories before its eventual decline and the rise of integrated digital systems.
