Description
Circa Early 1970's to Late 1980's
As a result of licensing and shared heritage, the NORTHERN TELECOM/ELECTRIC version (referred to as the 2554 in product listings) is essentially the Canadian counterpart to the American-made WESTERN ELECTRIC phone, making them nearly indistinguishable in appearance.
Use Case:
A standard, reliable landline telephone for making and receiving voice calls. Its wall-mounted design was particularly popular in kitchens or hallways where counter space was limited. This model uses push-button dialing for faster tone-based signaling, a feature that was advanced compared to the older, slower rotary pulse dialing systems.
Historical Significance:
This telephone is historically significant as a ubiquitous icon of Canadian industrial design during the peak of the analog telecommunications era. NORTHERN TELECOM was a major global supplier, and these sturdy, reliable phones were a common fixture in Canadian homes for decades. They represent the transition from heavier, all-metal phones to plastic housing, and from rotary dialing to the more convenient push-button technology that enabled access to automated phone services (e.g., dialing * or #). The need for such a dedicated, single-purpose landline phone has largely faded due to the rise of mobile phones and digital VoIP services.
NOTE: Can be used with the VIKING DLE-200B Two-Way Phone Line Simulator that provides on-set talk-path and ringing capabilities (available separately).
