Description
Circa 1994
A data unit that provided an interface for connecting data terminal equipment (DTE), such as computers, to the Datapath service—a dedicated switched digital data network provided by telephone companies.
Use Case:
Used to provide reliable, synchronous, or asynchronous digital data transmission speeds (from 300 bps up to 19.2 kbps) over the public switched telephone network, primarily used by businesses for applications such as electronic messaging, directory services, and basic data processing before the widespread adoption of the internet. It allowed users to make voice calls and send/receive data simultaneously over the same lines.
Historical Significance:
A key transitional technology in the history of data communications. NORTHERN TELECOM was a pioneer in "Digital World" products and this unit was part of a major push to offer integrated voice and data solutions. The associated Datapath service was historically significant as it was the world's first public data network designed specifically for X.25 packet switching standards. This technology offered reliable digital connectivity before ISDN and TCP/IP (Internet Protocol) based networks largely replaced these specialized services in the late 1990s and 2000s.
