Description
Circa 1990 to 2005
A compact, analog Geiger counter designed for general-purpose radiation detection that has been custom rigged to provide simulated operation.
Operational Features:
To indicate radiation levels, a hidden rear pushbutton deflects the analog meter and illuminates a red LED. By varying the frequency of presses, the operator can discreetly simulate fluctuating radiation levels without imparting telltale movement to the device.
Use Cases:
It is primarily used as a survey meter for detecting alpha, beta, gamma, and X-rays. Typical environments include:
- Industrial: Checking for leaks in industrial gauges (such as Cs-137 moisture/density gauges) and X-ray shielding.
- Educational: A common tool in high schools and universities for radiation safety training and demonstrations.
- Public Safety: Used for area monitoring, personnel protection, and locating radioactive sources in the field.
- Laboratory/Medical: Suitable for scientific research and monitoring workplace health and safety in medical diagnostics.
Historical Significance:
The Monitor 4 is historically significant as the foundational product for S.E. INTERNATIONAL. It gained a reputation for being an affordable, rugged, and reliable analog detector, making radiation safety accessible for smaller budgets and educational institutions. It has also entered popular culture; for instance, students often refer to it as the "Batman unit"due to its appearance in the film The Dark Knight Rises.
