Historical Significance
The EL-808 is historically significant, as it is one of the very first calculators to utilize a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), following closely on the heels of Sharp's groundbreaking, world's first LCD calculator, the EL-805, introduced in 1973.
- Features an early reflective "Dynamic Scattering Mode" (DSM) LCD, which produced silver-colored numerals on a black background.
- Inclusion of the pop-up lid above the display was necessary for reading the display clearly in bright lighting conditions by providing shade.
- This model represented a key step in the transition from power-hungry LED and VFD displays to the low-power LCD technology that would eventually dominate the portable electronics market, making truly compact, long-lasting calculators possible
