Description
Circa Early 1980's
An iconic articulated sculpture and kinetic toy created by American sculptor Richard X. Zawitz. It is widely recognized as one of the original "fidget" tools, blending modern art with sensory therapy.
This model, know as theTangle Museum Chrome (also known as the Museum Collection or simply the Museum Tangle) is the largest version in the Chrome Collection, designed specifically as a high-end desktop or display sculpture.
Model Specifications:
- Dimensions: Approximately 9.6" x 7.9" x 7.5" when coiled.
- Expansion: It can be manipulated and extended to over 2 feet (24 inches) in length.
- Weight: Approximately 1.8 lbs (0.8 kg), giving it a substantial, high-quality feel compared to smaller toy versions.
- Segments: Comprised of 18 interconnected 5-inch sections with a high-quality chrome-plated finish.
- Material: Professional versions are made of durable ABS plastic or chrome-plated polyresin, while some specific editions are produced in die-cast metal.
Origins and History:
- The Inspiration: Zawitz developed the Tangle after extensive travels through Asia, where he studied Asian philosophy and art. The design is directly inspired by the Tibetan Infinite Knot, a symbol of interconnectedness and endless energy.
- Initial Launch: The product was first introduced in 1981 (with wider commercial release in 1982) at the San Francisco Gift Show.
- Evolution to Toy: Originally intended as a "reposeable kinetic sculpture," Zawitz noticed trade show attendees could not stop playing with it. This led to the creation of the Tangle Jr. in 1989 through a partnership with JAMES INDUSTRIES (the makers of Slinky).
