Description
Circa 1989
A second-generation handheld cellular phone designed to be smaller and more ergonomic than its "brick phone" predecessors.
Use Case:
Intended for personal, untethered mobile voice communication. It was an analog phone that operated on networks like AMPS or ETACS, depending on the region. The design was noted for being modelled on military telephones to be ergonomically designed and durable. Features included a backlit display, auto-dialing, and a speakerphone.
Historical Significance:
One of the key devices that moved mobile communication from bulky car phones and large "hand-portables" to smaller, more personal devices that could fit into a pocket. Its innovative design, which earned a British Design and Art Direction (D&AD) award in 1991, helped shape expectations for the future of mobile phones as a mass-consumer item and positioned TECHNOPHONE as a major European manufacturer before their acquisition by NOKIA.
