Description
Circa Early 1970's to Early 1980's
A general-purpose, non-storage X-Y display monitor designed to provide high-quality analog data visualizations on a large 6.5-inch screen.
Use Cases:
The 604 is an X-Y monitor rather than a traditional time-base oscilloscope; it is primarily used for applications requiring external control of both horizontal and vertical axes.
- Medical & Biophysical: Used for EMG recordings, speech therapy, and medical instrumentation.
- Industrial & Scientific: Applied in ultrasonic detection, electron microscope systems, vibration analysis, and thermal scanning.
- Electronic Testing: Useful for checking IF (Intermediate Frequency) response curves when paired with a sweep/marker generator, as well as data communications and logic testing.
- Broadcast Television: Serves as a high-precision diagnostic tool for maintaining signal integrity, functioning as a large-scale stereo phase monitor to visualize audio separation and an external vectorscope display for analyzing color phase. It was also essential for equipment calibration by displaying IF response curves and monitoring Vertical Interval Test Signals (VITS) to ensure broadcast quality remained consistent while a station was live on the air.
Historical Significance:
- The 600-Series Era: The 604 was part of a successful line of specialized display monitors that provided higher resolution and larger screens than standard oscilloscopes of the era.
- Evolution of Displays: It represents a bridge between earlier tube-based laboratory equipment and the more specialized, high-resolution monitors (like the 606) that followed in the late 1970s.
- Reliability: It is noted for its "serviceable" design and durability, with many units still operational today for vintage equipment enthusiasts and hobbyists.
