Circa Early 1960's


A custom movie prop manufactured by PROPOLOGY.ca, designed to represent an authentic, portable, multi-line telephone monitoring station for law enforcement use.


Use Case:


  • Multi-Line Interception: Allows the surveillance operator to connect to and monitor up to six different telephone lines simultaneously.


  • Selective Monitoring: The operator could toggle switches to select which lines to actively monitor or record at any given time.


  • Audio Management: Provisions for connecting headsets would allow operators to listen in privately, while potential connections for external amplified loudspeakers would permit group monitoring in a command center.


  • Recording Integration: Output jacks labeled "SWEEP OUTPUT," "SWEEPING OSCILLATOR OUTPUT," and others, serve as connection points for reel-to-reel tape recorders for documenting conversations as evidence.


  • Technical Monitoring: The various meters and "FINE TUNE" knobs would provide the fictional operators with visual feedback on signal strength, line activity, and other notional technical parameters crucial for maintaining the quality of the surveillance operation.

Background:


This prop was made from a customized real-world device known as a KAY ELECTRIC Kada-Sweep (PAT. NO. 2677804). This was a specialized type of sweep generator used by engineers and technicians to test the frequency response of electronic circuits, such as filters, amplifiers, and radar IF amplifiers. The device generates an electrical signal that "sweeps" across a specific range of frequencies at a constant amplitude.


NOTE: This device is designed to fit into a commonly available HALLIBURTON aluminum attaché case (not included).
