Description
Circa Late 1990's to Early 2000's
Accessory that connects to a landline phone to provide a visual notification (a red light on top of the device) when a new voicemail message is waiting.
Use Case:
Designed to be used with landline phones that do not have a built-in message waiting indicator (MWI) light or a visual display. It works in conjunction with the network's message waiting tone (a series of short dial tones) to visually alert the user of new messages. The user would connect the device in-line with their phone and the wall jack using the provided telephone cords.
Historical Significance:
Significant as a transitional technology. It represents an era where basic landline phones lacked integrated advanced features. The device provided a simple, universal solution for visual voicemail notification before phone technology advanced to include built-in MWI lights or digital displays, and before the widespread adoption of visual voicemail features on mobile smartphones which have since largely replaced traditional landlines. The feature is even noted as being problematic or unavailable on newer fibre-based home phone services as technology has evolved away from the traditional copper phone line system.
