Description

Circa 1996

A legendary animatronic plush toy originally manufactured by Tyco Preschool (a division of Tyco Toys).

Features:

  • Interactivity: When its stomach is squeezed once, Elmo giggles. Pressing it three times in a row causes him to shake and vibrate with uncontrollable laughter.

  • Power: The original 15-inch vintage model typically requires three AA batteries and features an auto shut-off to preserve battery life.

Origins & History:

  • Introduction: First released in July 1996, it quickly became a massive cultural phenomenon, peaking during the 1996 Christmas shopping season.

  • The Craze: Due to extreme scarcity, the toy—which originally retailed for approximately $28.99 USD—was famously resold by scalpers for hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

  • Inventors: It was invented by Ron Dubren and Greg Hyman, originally pitched as "Tickles the Chimp" before being adapted for the Sesame Street license.
