Description

Circa 1947

Specifically designed for use by Bell System switchboard operators and PABX (Private Automatic Branch Exchange) operators.

Use Case:

Allowed operators to efficiently connect calls manually at large central office switchboards or smaller business exchanges. It offered hands-free operation, which was a significant improvement over older chest-mounted transmitters. The plug is a specific "twin double plug" designed to fit into the corresponding jack field on the switchboard console. Different models (52AW, 52BW, 52DW, 52CW) were used for various roles, such as regular operators, supervisors, or night operators.

Historical Significance:

An iconic piece of telephone history, symbolizing the era of manual call routing before full automation became ubiquitous. It represents a key design improvement in operator comfort and transmission clarity during the peak years of the Bell System's service, eliminating the bulky chest transmitter previously in use.
