Description

Circa Mid 1990's to Early 2000's

A transient voltage surge suppressor and power control center designed for early desktop computers.

Use Case:

Was used to provide power distribution and surge protection for a typical desktop computer setup of its era. Users would plug their computer, monitor, printer, and auxiliary peripherals into the dedicated, individually switched outlets. The unit was often placed under the CRT monitor, raising it to a more ergonomic viewing height while offering convenient front-facing power control for the entire system through dedicated and a master power switch.

Historical Significance:

This device represents a common accessory in the era of early personal computing, where desk space organization and simple power management were key concerns.

  • Convenience: It offered a centralized, accessible location to power on/off an entire multi-component computer system with a single main switch, a feature valued before modern operating systems offered sophisticated power management.

  • Aesthetics: The beige casing and design were typical of computer equipment of the 1990s, blending seamlessly into the common office environment of the time.

  • Safety Standard Evolution: While providing surge suppression, technology has advanced significantly since its production. Modern surge protectors often offer much higher joule ratings and improved safety standards, meaning these vintage units are often recommended for use only as basic power strips today, as their surge protection capability may have degraded or is insufficient for modern equipment.
