Description

Circa 1975

Use Case:

Designed for field technicians to quickly and accurately test various signaling and operational parameters of analog telephone lines and circuits, specifically related to rotary dialing and loop supervision. The device could:

  • Measure Dial Pulses: The meter measures the speed (pulses per second or PPS) and the "break" percentage of rotary dialing signals, ensuring they were within industry standards (e.g., 10 or 12 PPS).

  • Test Polarity: The polarity switches and test function verified correct line wiring, crucial for proper billing and supervision functions.

  • Simulate Conditions: Various switches allowed technicians to simulate different line conditions (e.g., "TALK", "TEST", "RLS" for release), assisting in isolating faults.

  • Monitor Current and Voltage: The milliammeter measured loop current (D.C. milliamperes), a key metric for determining line health and length.

Historical Significance:

An excellent example of the highly specialized test equipment required to maintain the analog public switched telephone network (PSTN) before widespread digital conversion. It represents the robust engineering and diagnostic tools of the mid-20th century, essential for the reliability of the telephone system. As pulse dialing and analog signaling have largely been replaced by digital touch-tone and VoIP technology, the device is now a historical artifact of telecommunications engineering.
