Description
Circa Mid 1990's to Early 2000's
An inline radio frequency (RF) pre-amplifier designed specifically for use with scanner radios to improve the reception quality and range of weak signals.
Use Case:
This device is connected between a scanner radio and its antenna via the BNC connectors. It amplifies incoming signals within the 100 MHz to 1 GHz frequency range by an adjustable 0 to 20 dB. This is particularly useful in rural areas to pull in distant transmissions or to compensate for signal loss in long coaxial cable runs. It can be powered by an internal 9V battery or an external 9V DC adapter.
Historical Significance:
This device represents the consumer electronics market before the decline of dedicated scanner radios due to digital trunking systems and the rise of software-defined radio (SDR) technologies. GRE (GENERAL RESEARCH of ELECTRONICS), the manufacturer, was a major player in the scanner market, producing many models for companies like RADIO SHACK before ceasing production in 2012–2013.
