This is a single intercom station. It would normally be attached to a multi-station intercom system.
Use Case:
Provides two-way voice communication between different rooms or designated stations in a building without the need for shouting or installing complex telephone lines. Users would press a call button to alert the other station and a talk button to speak. Designed for wall mounting.
Historical Significance:
This equipment is representative of the widespread use of intercom systems in the mid-20th century.
