Description

Circa 1995

An advanced, all-in-one control microphone and remote head for specific YAESU mobile amateur radio transceivers. It is not just a simple microphone but a full remote control unit that manages all radio functions. When in use, the entire the keypad on both sides is illuminated with green backlighting.

Use Case:

Specifically designed for use with the YAESU FT-8500 dual-band mobile radio. It was a key selling point of that radio, allowing the main radio body to be hidden (e.g., in a trunk or under a seat) while the operator controlled every feature—including volume, squelch, frequency tuning, memory programming, and menu navigation—from the palm of their hand. It is primarily used by licensed ham radio operators in mobile installations.

Historical Significance:

An early and innovative attempt at a full-control remote microphone interface for amateur mobile radios. Its unique design, which earned it the affectionate nickname "Mr. Potato Head" among operators, was polarizing but represented a major step in compact, feature-rich mobile radio ergonomics. It provided a level of control and flexibility that was new for its time and is still highly valued by collectors and enthusiasts.

NOTE: 5-Units available.
