Description
Circa Late 1990's to Early 2000's
This is a custom movie prop manufactured by PROPOLOGY.ca. Notionally, it portrays an authentic, professional, parabolic directional microphone.
It can be used with any monaural or stereo headset equipped with a 1/4-inch phone plug. Alternately, a recording device can be connected via the 1/4-inch phone jack located at the back of the unit's main housing. Either device will cause the red LED "PWR" indicator to illuminate once connection is made. The dish component is made from light-weight fiberglass, and the device is powered via an internal 9-volt battery.
Use Cases:
- Wildlife Observation and Research: One of the most common applications is for recording the sounds of birds and other animals in their natural habitats without disturbing them. The dish amplifies faint, distant sounds and isolates them from background noise.
- Sports Broadcasting and Field Audio: Parabolic microphones are ubiquitous at professional sporting events, particularly football and baseball games. Operators use them on the sidelines to capture specific sounds like player communication, hits, and the crack of a bat, which adds to the immersive experience for television viewers.
- Search and Rescue Operations: In quiet wilderness environments, search and rescue teams use these microphones to potentially detect the shouts or calls for help from lost individuals over very long distances, far beyond the range of unaided human hearing.
- Journalism and News Gathering: Journalists can use parabolic microphones in crowded or unpredictable public settings (like rallies or protests) to focus on a specific speaker and capture clear audio without physically being in the middle of the crowd.
- Industrial Maintenance: They can be used in industrial settings to locate specific mechanical noises, such as air leaks or arcing in electrical systems.
Audio Surveillance Applications:
In a law enforcement or intelligence context, a real version of this microphone would be a valuable tool for gathering audio intelligence from a safe, concealed distance in public or open outdoor areas.
- Intelligence Gathering: The primary use is to eavesdrop on conversations that might be inaccessible by other means, such as conversations in a parking lot, a public park, or a remote location.
- Situational Awareness: Law enforcement and security teams use them to monitor perimeters and assess potential threats during sensitive operations or high-risk situations, allowing operators to stay safely out of the target's immediate awareness radius.
- Evidence Collection: In scenarios where a court warrant or ministerial order has been obtained, recordings from such a device could be used as evidence in legal proceedings, provided they meet strict legal requirements for authenticity and chain of custody.
